How to Play Asteroids Game

Use the keyboard to move the ship and shoot the asteroids. You must move your spaceship by rotating and using your thrust. Shoot and destroy all asteroids and saucers, but watch out. Asteroids will break into smaller pieces and asteroids that drift will reappear from the sides. Each asteroid will earn 20 to 100 points. And the game will become a lot harder when you reach more points. The big saucer will shoot randomly and poorly, but the small saucer is much more precise. It will also give you 1000 points. Don't forget to use the Hyperspace feature, but don't use it too frequently or your ship might crash.

The objective of Asteroids is to score as many points as possible by destroying asteroids and flying saucers. The player controls a triangular-shaped spaceship that can rotate left and right, fire shots straight forward, and thrust forward. The player can also send their ship into hyperspace, causing it to disappear and reappear in a random location on the screen (with the risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of an asteroid). Each stage starts with a few large asteroids drifting in random directions on the screen. Objects wrap around screen edges - for instance, an asteroid that drifts off the top edge of the screen reappears at the bottom and continues moving in the same direction. As the player shoots asteroids, they break into smaller asteroids that frequently move faster and are more difficult to hit. Smaller asteroids also score higher points. Periodically, a flying saucer appears on one side of the screen and moves across to the other before disappearing again.

Classic Asteroids - Game History

Asteroids, released by Atari in November 1979, was a groundbreaking spaceship video game of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. It quickly became one of Atari's best-selling titles, selling 70,000 arcade cabinets. Conceived by Lyle Rains and designed by Dominic Walsh and Ed Logg, Asteroids was implemented on hardware developed by Howard Delman. Due to its popularity, Asteroids cabinets were sometimes used to house the game instead of Lunar Lander, another Atari title in production. Asteroids was also the first game to use Atari's QuadraScan vector-refresh system, later appearing in full color in games like Space Duel and Tempest.
