Jetpac - Build Your Rocket and Battle Alien Invaders

Blast off into retro arcade action with Jetpac, a classic space shooter where players take control of an astronaut named Jetman on a mission across dangerous alien worlds. Released in 1983 by Ultimate Play the Game for the ZX Spectrum and other early home computers, Jetpac quickly became a huge success and helped launch the legendary studio that would later become Rare.

In Jetpac, your mission is to rebuild a rocket that has been scattered across the planet. Players must collect the rocket's missing pieces, assemble them on the launch platform, and then gather fuel canisters to power the spacecraft for takeoff. While completing these tasks, Jetman must defend himself from waves of hostile aliens using a laser gun, creating a fast-paced mix of shooting, flying, and resource collection.

Each level introduces new alien enemies with different movement patterns, making every planet more challenging than the last. The game's addictive gameplay, clever design, and increasing difficulty helped it win Game of the Year at the 1983 Golden Joystick Awards, cementing its place as one of the most beloved retro arcade space games.

Classic Jetpac Space Video Game - Game Play

The video game starts with Jetman looking to assemble his rocket (which comes in kit form), the three separate parts that are scattered around the screen. When he get the rocket fully put together he needs fill it with fuel before taking off to the next planet (where the procedure is broadly repeated). Along the way Jetman has to defend himself from the planet's aliens that are preventing him from completing his task. In addition he also get to collect valuable resources which occasionally fall from the sky for bonus points. After the first level, the rocket stays assembled and just requires refueling. Jetman can use the rocket to travel to various other planets to collect precious gems or gold. But before taking off again Jetman has to locate fuel to refill the rocket. However, every five levels, the rocket is changed and the replacement has to be built before it can be fueled for take off. Each new model has a new design with a higher number written on it, although the gameplay is unchanged. The single game screen is a horizontal wrap around and consists of three platforms on which Jetman can stand. The various enemies will change on every level (cycling back to the first after eight levels) and each alien has a different pattern of movement which means they can be dealt with in a different manner. For instance, the "dart" enemy tends to hover in a vertical column on the left-hand side of the screen until it fires across the screen whereas, the "flying saucer" aliens will follow Jetman around and so require a different strategy.
