What was the Soviet Union?
The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a socialist state in Eurasia that spanned from 1922 to 1991. It was a union of multiple national Soviet republics, with a highly centralized government and economy. Governed by the Communist Party, Moscow served as its capital in its largest republic, Russia. The roots of the Soviet Union can be traced back to the 1917 October Revolution, when the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, toppled the Russian Provisional Government that had replaced Tsar Nicholas II during World War I.
